Definition of tapping

Tapping is to use a certain torque to screw a tap into the bottom hole to be drilled to process an internal thread.

What do rigid tapping and flexible tapping in CNC machining centers mean?

Flexible tapping means that the tool holder has a certain floating amount in the working direction, mainly the amount of stretching. The matching requirements between the machine tool's speed and feed are not very strict. When tapping, the programmed feed speed should be slightly smaller than the theoretical feed speed. Usually 10%, so that when the speed and feed do not match, the tool is slightly elongated to compensate for the feed deviation; rigid tapping means that the tool holder is rigidly connected, with no floating amount, and the machine tool spindle angle and feed The matching requirements are strict.

 

Flexible tapping cannot be re-attacked, while rigid tapping can be re-attacked. Rigid tapping requires the machine tool to have a rigid tapping function. In FANUC systems, there is often a dedicated M code to start the rigid tapping function, and this function also needs to be selected separately. Siemens systems usually come with a rigid tapping function as standard.

Key points of tapping

 

1) The opening of the threaded bottom hole on the workpiece should be chamfered, and both ends of the through-hole thread should be chamfered.

 

2) The position of the workpiece clamp should be correct, and try to keep the center line of the threaded hole in a horizontal or vertical position, so that it is easy to judge whether the tap axis is perpendicular to the plane of the workpiece during tapping.

 

3) When starting tapping, try to position the tap as straight as possible, then apply pressure to the tap and turn the hand. When cutting in 1-2 turns, carefully check and correct the position of the tap. Generally, when cutting into 3-4 turns of threads, the tap position should be correct. From now on, you only need to turn the hand without applying pressure to the tap, otherwise the thread profile will be damaged.

 

4) When tapping, every time you turn the winch 1/2-1 turn, you should turn it upside down for about 1/2 turn, so that the chips can be easily discharged after being broken, and can reduce the phenomenon of the cutting edge being stuck on the tap due to chips sticking.

 

5) When encountering a screw hole that cannot be tapped, withdraw the tap frequently to remove chips from the hole.

 

6) When tapping screw holes in plastic materials, add lubricating coolant. For steel materials, engine oil or emulsion with a higher concentration is generally used. For those with higher requirements, rapeseed oil or molybdenum disulfide can be used. For stainless steel, No. 30 engine oil or vulcanized oil can be used.

 

7) When switching to the last tap during tapping, screw it into the tapped thread by hand until it can no longer be screwed in, and then use a wrench to turn it. When exiting the last cone after tapping, it is also necessary to avoid turning the reamer quickly. It is best to unscrew it by hand to ensure that the quality of the thread that has been tapped is not affected.

 

8) During machine tapping, the tap and screw hole must remain coaxial.

 

9) When machine tapping, the calibrated part of the tap cannot come out completely, otherwise the teeth will be messed up when the tap is reversed and withdrawn.

 

10) The cutting speed during machine tapping is generally 6-15 m/min for steel materials; 5-10 m/min for quenched and tempered steel or harder steel materials; 2-7 m/min for stainless steel; and 8-7 m/min for cast iron. 10 meters/minute. For the same material, the smaller the tap diameter, the higher the value, and the larger the tap diameter, the lower value.

 
Routine maintenance during tapping

When tapping, the end hole must be chamfered; the tap must be coaxial with the hole of the workpiece; axial pressure should be applied at the beginning of tapping to make the tap cut in. After cutting in for a few turns, there is no need to apply axial force.

When the calibrated part of the tap enters the screw hole, it must be retreated 1/4 or 1/2 turn every half turn to one forward to break the chips before tapping downward; when tapping the through hole, withdraw frequently Tap for chip removal.

Add cutting fluid when tapping on steel workpieces. Add a little kerosene when tapping on cast iron workpieces. After using the first tap, the tap must be screwed into the screw hole when using the second or third tap.

When threading, the end of the workpiece should be chamfered, and the end face of the wrench should be perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece; axial pressure should be applied at the beginning of threading, and the rotational pressure should be correspondingly greater; when the wrench cuts threads on the workpiece, Just don't put any more pressure on it.

05/

When threading, in order to break the chips and discharge them in time, the wrench teeth should be rotated frequently.

06/

The workpiece should be firmly fixed on the clamp or fixture; when the tap breaks, do not touch the broken part with your hands, use a clamp or punch to remove it. Wear protective glasses when the wire is broken.
